Attackers exploited an AI interface to gain unauthorized access to customer data. The cloud company Vercel is particularly well-known for the development of the popular framework Next.js. Now, the company itself has been the target of a cyberattack. This incident affected internal systems as early as the research phase.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\">According to the company, a compromised Google Workspace account belonging to an employee served as the entry point. This account was linked to the external AI tool Context.ai. Consequently, the hackers were able to use this OAuth interface to penetrate Vercel&#8217;s environments. In doing so, they gained unauthorized access to the data of a limited number of customers.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">CEO Guillermo Rauch acknowledged the speed of the attackers. However, he simultaneously emphasized the security of open-source projects. Open-source projects such as Next.js or Turbopack are completely secure and unaffected following a thorough review of the supply chain.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">Furthermore, Vercel intends to investigate the incident together with authorities and cybersecurity experts from Mandiant. The company has already informed the affected customers. Moreover, Vercel has urged them to change their access credentials. Additionally, Indicators of Compromise (IOCs) have been published. Google Workspace administrators can use these to check for suspicious applications.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">The group behind the attack calls itself &#8220;ShinyHunters.&#8221; They now claim on X to be offering the stolen Vercel data for sale for 2 million dollars.
